The Gardiner Public Library is seeking a vibrant, engaging, and welcoming full-time Children’s Librarian for its busy downtown library. Our Children’s Room is a lively, fun-filled, and cheerful space. Our ideal candidate must demonstrate outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills, as a great part of this job involves interacting with our local community, parents, families, and children of all developmental stages. This position exercises general management of the Children's Room, collaborating with fellow staff and volunteers, and reporting to the Library Director.
The Children's Room encompasses our entire second floor, and features its own service desk, hosts a wide range of programming activities, and offers many interactive toys. We aim for it to be a vibrant, active, and enticing space for a variety of interests and engagement.
We are looking for a creative and friendly staff member who enjoys interacting with babies, toddlers, children, tweens, teens and their caregivers - welcoming them at whatever level they come to us - and creating a safe and welcoming space for our community.
We need someone who can maintain and develop our children’s collection - from purchasing new materials in an informed, skilled, and thoughtful manner, evaluating materials for relevancy and demand, and delivering informed readers advisory for children from birth through middle school. We also want someone who is experienced with planning and implementing active and engaging programs and activities for young children, as well as someone eager to introduce additional programming and activities, from regularly scheduled STEM, STEAM, and homeschooling activities to interactive and engaging Summer Reading programs, and more.
Our ideal candidate will keep the room looking cheerful, neat, engaging, and welcoming to all; continually develop and promote new programming opportunities; routinely collaborate on family programming with fellow professional staff in other departments; and develop and maintain outreach relationships and efforts with local schools and developmental educational programs.
This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week on-site position. Library hours vary and this position includes periodical and rotating evening and weekend hours.
The range of pay is $22.49 to $25.45 per hour depending on experience, plus excellent benefits, including health insurance and MePERS retirement.
Interested candidates should email a completed application, resume, and cover letter to Dawn Thistle at dthistle@gardinermaine.com
This position will remain open until filled. The City of Gardiner is an equal opportunity employer.
