Beware of text messages threatening consequences if you don't pay up! It's likely a phishing scam.
Several citizens have reached out today the the Gardiner Police Department about a scam involving fines owed in Cumberland County. If you receive one of these notifications report it to the Maine Attorney General's Office. DO NOT call the number on the notification, do not click on any links, do not scan any QR codes, and do not submit any payment. The courts DO NOT send violation notices by text.
Scammers will often use urgency - "react immediately or face the consequences" - to get victims to react before they have a chance to think it through or talk to someone. Take a breath and always take the time to confirm a situation before acting, no matter how much you are being pressured to act immediately. Look up a phone number (NEVER just call the number that texted you or one listed in the message) and ASK them before doing anything.
And remember, important notices like court summons, collection notices, fines, etc. are unlikely to come by text or email. If you have fallen prey to this scam or a similar one, reach out to your local law enforcement or the Office of the Maine Attorney General.
